Chicken Lay’s Small Egg (Fairy Egg)

Today was a Fairy Egg, there are lots of reasons for this and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it’s something that just happens and there can be lots of reasons for it.

People refer to this as a “misfire” or “not firing on all cylinders” which is a car persons reference.

99 Days – Her first Egg was on Dec 31st 2023 (Happy New Year)
98 Eggs – Fairy Egg Day and we are not sure why this happened today

The one day she missed giving us an egg was a couple weeks after the cold spell just out of random?

Young Hens in their first couple months of laying may lay a Fairy Egg at random. The Hens reproductive system may be just getting sorted out.
It’s normal and could even be considered to be a special event!

It could be an older hen who’s system is winding down and there is just a slight “Glitch in the Matrix”!

Stress from any number of thing’s could be a factor which caused this to happen. Rooster problem, predator interference, sickness or even molting stress has been known to be a cause of this.

Tiny eggs are essentially a reproductive misfire. They occur when an egg is formed by mistake, without a normal yolk inside. Yolk size determines egg size, and fairy eggs rarely have a proper yolk. A normal egg is formed when a yolk is released in the oviduct and travels down through the chicken forming itself into a complete egg along the way.

This particular one was an oddity as most of the time this happens without a yolk and is called by some a “Fart Egg”. This one had a tiny yolk and looked like a real egg with the exception that it had a very thick consistency.

If you want to do a good inspection of a particular bird night-time may be the easiest way of checking for problems.

Night is also a good time to check for insect pests in the coop, night is when your chickens are roosting and some bugs know that it is prime feeding and attack time for them because the Chickens are an easy target at that time because they are just Roosting n Relaxing.
